After a meeting with our pedagogical advisor last night, I was feeling all inspired to make and test out an English board game with the kids. So let me introduce you to the masterpiece below which I named 'Snake' because I wasn't organised enough to come up with a cooler name ahead of time.
Each square of the game stands for a different thing - spelling (they have to spell the word I give them), country / animal / food (name a country / animal / food starting with the letter on the card), question (come up with the question to the answer on the card) and make a sentence (make a sentence including the word on the card).
Granted, it isn't really teaching any new English but it gets the kids talking and thinking in English. It's also competitive which makes it fun!
Another one of the games we played today was word dominoes. Our grade 5's love this game and begged and begged to play it today. The game is basically dominoes created with words. We let them compete for about 7 minutes and and then whichever team has the most words wins.
It's really great seeing the kids work together to come up with the words and figure out the spelling. One of the most interesting words I've seen is 'Dutyfree' (which is actually two words but it was so ridiculous that I let them have it).
Today was also a little sad as I discovered that our school used to have a library but doesn't anymore. I know what you're thinking, I've been at this school for 3 months, how did you not know that the school didn't have a library. I did! I just thought the school never had one. There is something infinitely sadder about there being a library and now it just being a locked room with empty bookcases #sadpanda.
MM x
